Greenwich is a municipal housing estate. The destination of the number 1 bus.

Below the Greenwich estate is the dock area with grain and oil storage. Here you will find Greenwich Road and, opposite, its more modern counterpart, Greenwich Close

Anglo-Saxon Origins

Both Greenwich and Ipswich demonstrate their Anglo-Saxon origins by the -wich ending.

Ipswich was originally called Gippeswyk. There is still a park called Gippeswyk Park. Over time Gippeswyk has become Ipswich.

The Anglo-Saxons originally crossed the North Sea from what is now Holland (The Netherlands) leaving behind places such as Rijswijk and Noordwijk. (R˙sw˙k and Noordw˙k)

Other places in East Anglia and Kent ending -wich are:

  • Norwich, Norfolk

  • Dunwich, Suffolk (now mainly lost into the North Sea)

  • Harwich, Essex

  • Sandwich, Kent

  • Woolwich (close to Greenwich)
